THE Fiji Football Association board will on Sunday discuss a proposal by the Labasa Town Council on having a major soccer tournament staged at Subrail Park this year.

Fiji FA chief executive Bob Kumar, who returns from Australia today, said the FFA had asked the council to comply with several requirements before its proposal could be considered further.

Those requirements include the extension of seating capacity, improvements to toilet facilities, change rooms and upgrading of the playing field.

"But we did not make any commitment to moving a major tournament there," he said.

"We have written to the council informing it of our meeting on March 22 when we will further discuss their proposal," he said.

Town administrator Vijay Chand said a major soccer tournament to be held in the North "is long overdue".

"The council won't get much money out of it yet we want one here because it's what thousands of soccer fans here want," Mr Chand said.

"It will be good for business since thousands of people will come to our shores and frankly this is something that we need," he said.

Work on extending the Subrail Park embankment and construction of new toilets begins this week.
