Vendors complain of dump

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

MARKET vendors at Makoi in Nasinu are unhappy with the new garbage site chosen by the Nasinu Town Council.

Rubbish has been dumped about 200 metres from across the market since last Wednesday.

The vendors say what is even worse is that the dump along Vunidogo Road is also near the Makoi Health Centre.

One of the concerned market vendors, Alitia Waqa said they had raised their concerns with the Nasinu Town Council but nothing was done.

"We are concerned because people won't be coming to buy what we sell, if that rubbish start to emit foul smell," she said.

" And that will also affect us and the public at large," Mrs Waqa said.

She added the council's rubbish trucks started piling rubbish at the site last week.

"The truck of rubbish came here and dumped the rubbish there.

"And we complained to the Nasinu Town Council, two officers came and inspected the site and went back but did not say how they will solve the problem."

Nasinu Town Council chief executive officer Satish Kumar said he would look into the matter.

"The problem is, we just terminated the contract of the company that always do rubbish collection for us recently and we have a temporary contractor doing the job while we will advertise and ask for other companies to provide this service for Nasinu Town Council.

"I will ensure that we will clear those rubbish at Makoi by this afternoon and we ask the people of Nasinu to bear with us," Mr Kumar said.

He also asked the residents of Nasinu to do the right thing and help in the cleanliness of the town area.

"We can't be doing our job while the people don't have the right attitude in dumping their garbage in the proper way.

"It should be a two-way thing," Mr Kumar said.
