NAMADI Heights residents want to prove a point to the Suva City Council about the amount of green waste that can be collected in a month.
Spokesman Fred Caine said they were grateful to Waste Management for donating two large garbage bins to the area.
This was done after a request by the residents to prove to the SCC they were serious about the green waste issue that has been in the spotlight for the past month.
"We have been telling the council that collecting two sacks per months is nothing and there is heaps of rubbish left. We wanted them to increase the collection of green waste since we pay high rates or change the method they use," said Mr Caine.
"This is to show the SCC the real picture and how big the problem is. The bins can hold up to 12 cubic metres of rubbish which is far more than what SCC trucks collect."
Waste Management picks the bins on its own cost. A survey by Mr Caine found that 95 per cent of the residents were not home from 8am to 5pm. The new green waste policy, says collection is made from a compound.
Mr Caine said it was a foolish move by the council because the new policy imposed $40 fine for rubbish by the roadside and the SCC had already lost $8000 for green rubbish outside compounds this month.
"Why make laws they can't implement.
"They say they will fine people but green waste can still be found all over the place."
