Rubbish bin concerns

DORINE NARAYAN
Monday, July 21, 2008

CONCERNED Caubati residents have called on the Nasinu Town Council to provide proper bins for their rubbish disposal.

Resident Sewak Ram said it was the council's job to ensure that rubbish was properly disposed.

"It should not be scattered around like what the situation is now. The council had a bin by the roadside but I don't understand why it was removed two days ago.

"As a result, rubbish is scattered everywhere and dogs are making the situation worse," said Mr Sewak.

The concerned resident said he had raised the matter several times with the council but it had fallen on deaf ears.

"We are giving the council ample time to come and clear the rubbish or I shall dump it inside the council's office," said the frustrated man.

He said it seemed the council was not serious about giving a clean look to the environment.

Nasinu mayor Rajeshwar Kumar said providing bins for rubbish collection was not the council's responsibility.

"The reason the bin is missing is because we have terminated the contract with the contractor and given it to someone temporarily to manage.

"There is no law that says the council has to provide bins for the ratepayers.

"In fact, the ratepayers should be responsible for their own rubbish and use garbage bags," said Mr Kumar.

He did not confirm if the council would reinstate garbage bins by the roadside.
