The Ministry of Environment will be implementing its first major waste management action plan in the Western Division.
The action plan was brought about after the launch of National Solid Waste Management Strategy earlier on.
The ministry's three-year Waste Minimisation and Recycling project starts in Nadi and Lautoka next month.
"It entails minimising waste at source from the purchase of products, sorting at household level for either recycling and so forth, and with landfilling being the last resort for disposal," says principal environment officer, Jope Davetanivalu.
"The promotion of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Return), will be the main components of this project, together with having a good system in place to accommodate these. The target groups are mainly ratepayers of Nadi and Lautoka.
Mr Davetanivalu said lessons learnt from this project would be replicated in other parts of Fiji such as the Northern and Central divisions.
The ministry will be working closely with Japan International Cooperation Agency on this project.
