LAUTOKA is committed to developing its profile as a green and litter-free city.
A committee involving stakeholders was formed on Wednesday to guarantee an immediate move toward the goal.
Spearheaded by the Lautoka City Council, the committee is expected to implement programs and initiatives within the municipality that encourage residents to exercise environment-friendly practices.
The committee will promote better waste management to lift the city's image and hopes to engage stakeholders to ensure the success of the project.
During their meeting at the council chambers, chief executive Pusp Raj outlined 33 areas for consideration.
He said while the green campaign was promoted for the clean cities and towns campaign due to start in October, they hoped all initiatives would continue when the campaign ends.
Lautoka mayor Rohit Kumar said they invited stakeholders from all sectors of the community to guarantee everyone shared the responsibility of keeping Lautoka city clean and free of litter.
"This is not a clean-up campaign but a wider form of approach that will guarantee a healthier environment for one and all," said Mr Kumar.
"It can only be achieved through everyone's co-operation and deliberation.
"Only by joining hands can we make Lautoka a greener and cleaner city for our future generations."
One of the concepts the committee focused on was the promotion of composting household waste.
The city council said that it expected to buy a shredder to help residents with the concept.
