ISSUES dealing with climate change, the greenhouse effect, rising sea levels and the effects of pollution have to be seen as a national responsibility, says interim Education Minister Filipe Bole.
Mr Bole in a statement said these issues needed to be addressed with urgency.
And in an effort to promote environmental care, he urged students and adults to take part in a video competition on taking care of the environment.
The competition is organised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation in partnership with Sandwatch Foundation. The website address for the new channel is www.sandwatch.ca/video_contest.ht.
"Schools, youth groups and communities are all invited to enter this competition," Mr Bole said.
"When students are educated on environmental issues, waste management will become effective, as students will actively participate with waste minimisation, recycling and improving final disposal."
Mr Bole encouraged schools to educate children and create awareness on the importance of protecting our environment.
The competition theme is: "Coping with climate change and how climate change is affecting your beach".
Entry forms are available and have to be submitted online no later then September 15. The video entries are to be uploaded to the Sandwatch You Tube Channel by December 1.
Videos may be prepared in English, French or Spanish. All videos will be judged in three separate categories: (a) 12 years old and younger; (b) 13-18 years, and (c) community groups.
