NGO wants more trees

Tuesday, July 08, 2008

THE Foundation for Rural Integration Enterprise N Development (FRIEND) is encouraging communities to plant local food and fruit trees in its battle against poverty.

Global Call for Action against Poverty co-ordinator Jone Nawaikula said the move was a FRIEND poverty-reduction initiative.

He said FRIEND together with the Ministry of Agriculture was encouraging communities to plant local food and fruit trees.

He said FRIEND had asked the ministry for seedlings and organised youth volunteers to help the Lovu Housing Assistance Relief Trust (HART) community in Lautoka plant various fruit trees including breadfruit and chillies.

"We hoped that the community living in HART will have a better food security as a result of this initiative," Mr Nawaikula said.

"FRIEND hopes to continue with communities in taking this project around the country and thanks the Ministry of Agriculture for the plants."
