Recycling is homegrown

DORINE NARAYAN

RECYCLING starts at home, say waste management companies in Fiji.

This was the key message from Waste Recyclers Fiji Ltd and HG Leach Fiji Ltd at the launch last week of a National Solid Waste Management Strategy and Action Plan 2008-2010.

Waste Recyclers general manager Peter Bray said the challenge was to convince people not to burn, not to throw but to save for recycling.

The company is responsible for collecting, processing, packaging and exporting recyclables.

Mr Bray said children were the best target group to promote recycling.

"As a company we did develop a brochure which was designed to go to every school-going person, some of whom would take the brochure home where it may be also read by parents," he said. "Some of these parents may even see the value of recycling not only at home but also in the workplace."

Mr Bray said this type of advertising is expensive.

Mark Hirst of HG Leach, the New Zealand-based company operating the Naboro Landfill, said the recycling process had to start at home and adults should take the lead.

He emphasised that it was the attitude of people that must be tuned in the right way.
