THE interim Cabinet has approved the Litter Promulgation of 2008.
This is basically a formal step taken by the interim Government to create a cleaner or litter-free environment.
Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister for Environment, Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi.
Mr Vayeshnoi said following the Cabinet's earlier approval of the draft promulgation in principle, appropriate consultations were held with relevant stakeholders, before the promulgation was finalised and enacted.
The minister said the relevant authorities would now be mobilised for the implementation and enforcement of the national initiatives of the Litter Promulgation (2008).
A committee chaired by the director of the Department of Environment with representations from Local Government, Central Board of Health, the Fiji Police Force, Land Transport Authority and other relevant stakeholders will be set up to monitor the implementation process of the litter decree.
The Litter Promulgation (2008) will come into effect after it is gazetted following some relevant procedures, hence it will be effective soon.
