FIJI faces a huge challenge trying to effectively manage all forms of waste in a sustainable manner, says interim Environment Minister Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi.
In taking the lead on this issue, the ministry has launched a National Solid Waste Management Strategy that identifies who the key players are in the waste management and what steps are needed to move towards better waste management.
"The inadequate efforts by all stakeholders in this vitally important discipline over the years have incurred the Fiji Government and the international community significant amounts of money," said Mr Vayeshnoi.
The strategy is based on seven key areas. They are:
n Legislation, regulation and institution;
n Information, education, awareness and community programs;
n research and development;
n waste minimisation and recycling;
n improving final disposal, monitoring litter control;
n efficient pricing and economic instruments; and
n infrastructure, services and collection.
Mr Vayeshnoi said to manage solid waste properly was a major concern for his ministry as it had the potential to cause negative impacts on national development activities including public health, the environment, food security, tourism and trade. The interim Government has allocated $100,000 for the effective implementation of NSWMS.
