Acting for the environment

ANA NIUMATAIWALU
Saturday, April 26, 2008

FOR Kazuaki Nunomiya, his passion for creating awareness of environment pollution through plays and skits, is the only way people will heed warnings.

The 31-year-old was born in Aichi Prefecture in Japan's Kasugai City, but spent most of his life in Setagaya Ward in Tokyo.

Kazu, as many of his peers call him, is in the country as a student with the Free Bird Institute to study English for three months.

By profession, back in Japan, Kazu is an actor and has performed in theatres at home.

"My father, mother, and elder sisters are all back in Japan," he said.

"My acting work involves plays that people in the world can enjoy and I have been doing this for the past 15 years.

"I started at a very early age when I started going to school. And what keeps me going is to see people smiling when they see my plays."

Two weeks ago Kazu staged a play on environmental pollution in Fiji.

He said in Japan, before everyone commences work, they're taken through an awareness prohramme.

"We are running to solve the problem of garbage, environmental protection," he said.

"But I think that is a little bit late because we began to work on those problems after we got it. I mean, we should have considered it before.

"Actually I love Fiji. I love all people, nature and everything in Fiji. I really recommend working on the problems as soon as possible in Fiji.

"I wish everyone works hard on environmental protection before it is too late."

Kazu said all environmental pollution starts from garbage, and it is up to Fiji's future generations to decide what they want to do from today onwards.

"Everyone has the power to make Fiji beautiful and a wonderful country," he said.

"I want the young people to keep having feelings that challenge them on every issue.

"There is nothing that cannot be done. I want to tell the young people.

"Here in Fiji most garbage is burnt, and everyone throws away garbage in the town - and at home.

"When it rains sometimes it gets flooded. Flooded water flows into rivers with garbage, and will become drinking water. "Everyone drinks the water."

"I am challenging a comprehensible thing and the thing started at once by using the play because I want you to defend beautiful Fiji. I love Fiji. "
