THE Fiji Council of Social Services has supported calls made by the Consumer Council of Fiji to reduce duty on fuel.
FCOSS executive director Hassan Khan said currently the duty on fuel is "very high".
Mr Khan said the increase in fuel would see an increase in many things such as bus fares.
"We have seen a lot of recent increases in prices of many basic necessities such as flour," he said.
"We appeal to the interim government to reduce duty on fuel."
The call follows a nine cents per litre rise in the price of diesel, which has forced the bus and taxi industries to apply for an increase in fares.
Consumer council chief executive Premila Kumar had said the only resolution was to waive duty completely or reduce duty on fuel.
The increase in price of fuel is becoming a crisis, she said. Fuel is a public good and used even for household consumption. Mrs Kumar had said the government should implement this measure in the 2008 budget.
Fiji Chamber of Commerce president Swani Maharaj had said if the interim Government reduced duty on fuel, it had to get revenue from elsewhere.
