THE Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption has hired a private lawyer from New Zealand.
Paul Johnson of Christchurch has been hired for the next two weeks to give legal advice to the commission.
Head of the commission, retired Colonel George Langman said Mr Johnson was hired purely on an advsiory basis and would be here for the next two weeks.
"After that he goes back and he will not be appearing in court," Mr Langman said.
He said Mr Johnson would advise FICACon any legal matters they dealt with. "He has had extensive experience in prosecution in New Zealand and he is a private lawyer there."
Mr Johnson could not be reached for comment.
On whether FICAC would seek the services of its former chief prosecuting officer Grant Tyrrell, Mr Langman said it depended on whether his services were needed. Mr Tyrrell was not allowed to represent FICAC in court after lawyer Graham Leung said the Kiwi lawyer did not have proper clearance from the Fiji Law Society and the Director of Public Prosecutions.
