New boss for PSC

1600 FJT
Thursday, January 04, 2007

Update: 3.50pm Former boxer Hector Hatch has been appointed head of the Public Service Commission, replacing Stuart Huggett who was sacked by the military.

Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama announced Mr Hatch's appointment at a press conference earlier this afternoon.

He said Mr Huggett was under investigation over allegations that a company he was tied to had tendered for a $40million government contract.

He also said Mr Huggett had shown a reluctance to work with the military regime.

This is the second time that Mr Hatch has taken part in an interim government.

He was Minister for Public Enterprise and Public Sector reform in the interim cabinet in the wake of the coup of 2000.

Ironically, he then served under Laisenia Qarase, the Prime Minister deposed by the military coup of December 5, 2006.
