Colo-i-Suva on the mend

FLAME Tree Colo-i-Suva Rugby Club members hope to restore lost glory when they play in the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament next week.

Colo-i-Suva is about 10 minutes drive from Suva City.

Its 7s team was one of the heavyweights of the annual tournament and had produced some national reps in the abbreviated rugby code.

The club last won the tournament in 1996 after it defeated Ratu Filise 29-24.

Coach Jone Navuso, who was the coach at that time, said teamwork and dedication were the keys to their victory.

"At that time, the rules were not that strict," Navuso said.

"It was the time where inter-passing or scissors were common. All Fijian players playing 7s at that time were using this technique.

"Those were the days when everybody played 7s. They all came up with their own style of playing which were exciting.

"Our aim this year is to get our team back to the top, where it was once a feared team."

Navuso said in the past, they had players who weren't popular, but their love for the sport helped them to achieve their goal.

"If we could do it then, we can do it now. No matter how good you are, if you believe and have faith in yourself along with teamwork, then your team will be unstoppable.

"In the past two years, we lost to Wardens in the elimination round 7-5 which was close.

"In this year's Marist 7s, we will expose our players who are unemployed and get their talents recognised by our national selectors."

He said one of the challenges they faced was trying to get a gym for training.

They hope to have their own gym at Colo-i-Suva Village one day.
