'Avoid distractions'

TEAM Fiji athletes have been advised to control the use cellular phones and internet during the Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Australia-based performance psychologist Krishneel Maharaj made the advise during the Team Fiji workshop in Suva on Sunday.

The advise was part of ways Maharaj, the son of former Commonwealth Games rep and South Pacific Games long-distance gold medallist, Atma, shared with athletes to help them perform well during the games.

Maharaj, former national athlete Laijipa Naulivou and Viliame Qio, were workshop faciliators.

"Mobile phones could be a distraction and the use should be minimised so that you can get enough rest," he told the athkletes.

He said skills related to sports could be broadly categorised into four areas such as technical, tactical, physical and psychological (mental).

"While there is some overlap between these skills, the area that receives the least attention is the mental component of sports performance,"Maharaj said.

He also facilitated a session on developing a high-performance culture for Team Fiji that looked at identifying the values and purpose of Team Fiji.

The games will be from April 4-15
