Phoenix go down in flames

Wednesday, March 14, 2018

WELLINGTON - Different coach, same substandard performance.

The Wellington Phoenix marked the first match of Chris Greenacre's third stint as caretaker coach with a 4-1 humiliation at Western Sydney on Monday night.

Greenacre has taken over (at least temporarily) from the outgoing Darije Kalezic, and having worked with the club's younger players as reserve team coach, his starting 11 included 17-year-old Liberato Cacace, 19-year-old Sarpreet Singh and Fiji's Roy Krishna.

They and their older team-mates at least held their hosts in the first half, with the score 1-1 at the break.

Brendon Santalab opened the scoring late in the first half with his 10th goal in 16 games against the Phoenix.

Phoenix will host Newcastle Jets on Saturday night.
