MORE than 70 matters were mediated at the Fiji Mediation Centre (FMC) last year, with 67.5 per cent of the cases being settled.

Centre chairperson Jenny Seeto highlighted this during her presentation at a stakeholders meeting for the centre in Suva yesterday.

Mrs Seeto said of the cases that were settled, more than 60 per cent were concluded within one working day.

She also outlined numerous disputes that could be resolved through mediation and said the centre was headed by the Judicial Department.

Issues such as professional malpractice, probate, personal injury, renovation, sales and purchase of property, trust land issues and any matter suitable for the Small Claims Tribunal could be resolved through mediation.

Mrs Seeto said the centre comprised 42 accredited mediators from around Fiji and they were judges, magistrates, lawyers, accountants, senior civil servants, academics and executive directors.

She said the centre now intended to conduct education and awareness sessions in communities around Fiji to make people aware of the work they were doing.

Chief Justice Anthony Gates emphasised that mediation was fast, less costly and left less scars on relationships.

"It is really important that you carry on relationships and I think this is what is so important about mediation."
