Proposed hospital project

THE Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) says it cannot comment at this stage on the proposed private public partnership (PPP) project for the two public hospitals in Lautoka and Ba.

Newly appointed FNPF chief executive officer Jaoji Koroi, however, assured the fund would comment on the project upon the finalisation of the process.

In response to queries from this newspaper, he acknowledged the announcement by Government.

"Through their advisers, Government is in the process of calling for tenders and as a potential investor, FNPF would refrain from making any comments at this stage that may compromise the commercial sensitivity of this due process," he said.

In Parliament on Monday, Minister for Economy and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the finalisation of the identity of an internationally certified hospital would be made in early May.

He said FNPF would be one of the private entities in the project, in partnership with an internationally certified hospital "to get a concession on the Lautoka Hospital and also the Ba Hospital".

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said FNPF members would be able to access their funds to pay for specific services offered by the new hospitals.

"Here, you have most people who go for overseas medical treatment, apart from getting assistance from the Minister for Health, they withdraw their FNPF funds," he said.

"(In) this particular instance, they will withdraw their FNPF funds from a fund that also is an owner of the concession.

"So that money goes in the circle but it provides the services, it also gives that capital investment to FNPF, they get a return on it, it works well for everyone and for us the most important thing is that, we are able to provide that level of medical services to ordinary Fijians that currently is not available."
