Players impress

THE Fiji Airways Fiji 7s forwards impressed former Flying Fijians and rugby pundit Reverend Joji Rinakama after the side won the Canada 7s yesterday in Vancouver.

Rinakama had been providing his expert comments on the Fiji 7s team this season where he had earlier said to give time to the players and they would deliver for the nation.

He said the players had matured now with players such as Kalione Nasoko, Sevuloni Mocenacagi and Josua Vakurinabili who were impressive in the tournament.

"I loved the way they play as a team ensuring they give all they can in the tournament.

"They concentrated on the kick-off where they made sure they won the kick-offs and contested for the ball," he said.

"I am happy with the way the players have come out in Canada to win the tournament where they made less basic mistakes, kept possessions and how they played playing under pressure whenever the opposition had the ball."

Fiji defeated Kenya 31-12 in the final with two tries from Mocenacagi while Vakurinabili, Alasio Naduva and Paula Dranisinukula scored a try each in the win.

"Fiji players have understood the importance of tight defence where the players kept their cool and defended well with the tight defence whenever the opposition came into the Fiji 22 metre territory," he said.

"Mocenacagi was the most impressive player in the tournament. I loved the way he played and committed himself in the set piece plays and in attack and kick-offs. He is a player to watch out for in the remaining tournaments."

Fiji stands at second spot with 101 points behind South Africa who are on 109 points.

The next tournament is the Hong Kong 7s.
