ABOUT 87 per cent of unfair dismissal cases brought to the attention of the Employment Ministry had been resolved through successful mediation.

This was told to Parliament by Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations Jone Usamate, while responding to a question by Government MP Howard Politini yesterday on how well the mediation services have been, in effectively resolving workplace employment grievances.

"For the cases of disadvantage where people felt they have been unfairly disadvantaged, about 64 per cent of the cases have been mediated successfully," Mr Usamate said.

"For discrimination, about 83 per cent have been successfully mediated; the success rate is very good."

He said over the past four years, on average, the success rate for the service was 80 per cent.

"For 2017, we noticed a number of cases that were mediated rose from 1128 to 1436, that is an increase in the number of cases by 27 per cent, but the succession of coming up with solutions increased from 82.4 per cent to 83.4 per cent."

Mr Usamate added in mediation, it was important to keep the people constantly involved in the mediation.

He said in the case of the Air Terminal Services impasse, there were substantive movement forward, but ultimately in the end, it did not move.

"They were not able to come up with a resolution so the matter was referred to the tribunal."
