Tuesday, March 13, 2018

FIJI is expected to deliver a country statement at the 62nd United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York this week.

Leading the team in New York is the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa, accompanied by the permanent Secretary Dr Josefa Koroivueta, director for Women Selai Korovusere and executive support officer Jone Jiuta.

"I believe that rural women need more exposure on empowerment opportunities provided by the Fijian Government and the programs in place for women and to be enlightened on gender parity and gaps.

"CSW is a good platform where a lot of new ideas are generated and Fiji must take note," Mrs Vuniwaqa said.

Mrs Vuniwaqa said the week-long meeting which started yesterday was a great opportunity to learn the best practices that each country presented and apply it in the Fiji context.

Mrs Vuniwaqa and her team would also attend side events such as round table discussions to exchange experiences, lessons learned and good practices on challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and providing empowerment of rural women and girls.

She is expected to meet the new Australian Minister for Women and New Zealand's Minister for Women at the meeting.

The theme for the meeting is: Challenges and Opportunities in Achieving Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Rural Women and Girls.
