The faith

THE HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series may be as competitive as it has ever been but Fiji Airways Fiji 7s coach Gareth Baber has identified something that gives his players the edge over the others — their faith.

"I am an Anglican and was brought up in the church in Wales, there are some stark similarities between the life in Wales and life in Fiji that I grew up in." Baber said.

"It is a privilege and an honour to be involved with a with a group of people who believe strongly in their faith and get so much power from it."

Fiji Airways Fiji 7s team, like many national teams, have daily devotions in the morning and in the evening while players always pray before kick-off.

"They know that obviously everyone back in Fiji is in prayer with them for the winning of this tournament (Canada 7s) and we are aware of that everywhere we go.

"There are some harsh realities about the nature of this competitive sport, but when you have that kind of faith behind you and the strength and power that we have as a group, we have got a nation behind us as … it comes from up (above)."

Fiji qualified for the Canada 7s quarter-finals today after defeating Spain, France and Kenya during yesterday's pool play.

New Zealand and Fiji won all their pool matches to top their pools respectively.

Fiji is currently third in the series standings behind South Africa and New Zealand.
