Update: 7:03PM MICRO and Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) is the backbone of an economy.

Fiji's Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Lands and Mineral Resources Faiyaz Koya said this in Parliament while responding to a question directed to him by Government MP Dr Brij Lal.

Dr Lal had asked the minister to elaborate on a statement stating Fiji needed to leverage trade and investment to foster MSMEs integration into international trade and global value chains.

Mr Koya said MSMEs constituted approximately 97 per cent of established businesses in Fiji and their contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was conservatively estimated to be 12 per cent.

"There are already efforts underway to foster the integration of MSMEs into international trade," Mr Koya said.

"A very good example is in the tourism sector where a number of primary MSMEs are supplying their produce to international hotel chains.

"Tourism is our largest foreign exchange earner and having our 'Fijian grown' produce feature regularly on the menus at our resorts and hotels will further promote our 'Fijian grown' brand internationally."

He said his ministry had also facilitated the sale of 'Fijian crafted' products in our major tourist retail outlets such as Tappoos, Jacks, and Prouds.

"A large number of visitors also place orders for 'Fijian crafted' products prior to their departure. This arrangement has provided the opportunity for our 'Fijian crafted' products to be visible in overseas markets, further raising the profile of our local MSME artisans on the international stage."
