Update: 3:01PM PROMOTING and educating occupational health and safety (OHS) at the workplace level is a challenge for the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Public Relations.

Minister Jone Usamate said they had encouraged employers to have risk control early to be able to resolve OHS issues and prevent serious accidents and deaths at the workplace.

In his ministerial statement in Parliament, Mr Usamate also noted that another challenge for them was occupational health.

"A lot has been said and done on occupational safety but not enough on occupational health," the Minister said.

"It has been reported that 80 per cent of deaths in the Pacific are because of non-communicable diseases.

"This is serious but the power to change this is in our hands.

"This can be reversed with healthy living, self-discipline, healthy eating, and exercising. This must be promoted strongly within the workplace - occupational health."
