Workplace injuries concern Employment ministry

Update: 12:19PM WORKPLACE injuries continue to be a concern for the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Public Relations with a total of 1443 injury cases reported in 2017.

This was highlighted by its Minister Jone Usamate during his ministerial statement in Parliament yesterday.

Mr Usamate said this was equal to 4329 lost working days for 2017 or 361 lost working days a month.

He also raised the issue that there had been late reporting of cases to the ministry.

"Under the law, injuries at the workplace must be reported within 14 days and deaths must be reported within seven days. But what we see are cases being reported to us after one or two years of the injury or death," Mr Usamate said.

"There has also been an increase in the number of compensation cases reported to us over the years as information and knowledge on rights at work has increased."
