Coaches meet in Suva forum

ABOUT 100 participants from various national and community based sporting bodies were part of the inaugural coaches forum at Albert Park in Suva.

The two-day coaches forum is a partnership between the Fiji Sports Commission, (FSC), Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) and Oceania National Olympic Committee (ONOC).

Peter Mazey, the FSC chairman said this workshop was a milestone one for sports in Fiji.

"Today (yesterday) marks a historical occasion in Fiji sports as we assemble coaches at different levels of participation to share their ideas on how the coaching processes could be enhanced to lift the performances of our athletes," Mazey said.

"It is the first (coach forum) that's been held in Fiji.

"What we have identified right around the country is that our athletes can only do so well but they need coaches.

"To us the coaches are becoming important"

Mazey said the visits by the commission in various centres inspired the idea of this forum.

"It came from the visits to rural and urban areas. We had lot of groups and clubs forum but did not have coaches to take the competitions and the sport further to the next level," he said.

"The lack of qualified coaches around the country has forced a lot of national sporting organisations to focus their sport around the major centres ruling out access to coaching for a majority of our talented athletes in the remote parts of the country.

"We are now taking this step forward and they have a lot of issues they want to address, challenges they are facing and this forum will become their submissions to the national sports conference this Saturday."

The discussion over the two days will enable to gather a submission which will be presented on Saturday at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.
