THE core of the national weight-lifting team to the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia will wrap up their preparations at the Oceania institute in New Caledonia.

A statement by Weightlifting Fiji stated that Apolonia Vaivai, Manueli Tulo, Poama Qaqa and Taniela Rainibogi left for New Caledonia on Monday and would be met by Eileen Cikamatana who's already there.

The squad will train under the guidance of national coach Joe Vueti.

The statement further stated that training among other Oceania weight-lifting medal prospects at the New Caledonia institute would be a good buildup for them.

Weightlifting Fiji sees Dika Toua, Morea Baru and Steven Kari from PNG along with David Katoatau of Kiribati and Jenly Wini of Solomon Islands as a threat.

"We're now in the critical phase of our training and preparation. We are looking at maximising all possible avenues to deliver on our objectives.

"We're aiming for a top eight finish for all of these athletes," general secretary Ritesh Ratiram said.

Other Commonwealth Games lifters Seruwaia Malani, Maria Mareta, Youth Olympic Games talent Sofia Kinikinilau would be under the guidance of Della Shaw-Elder and Henry Elder in Fiji.

The Commonwealth Games will be held from April 4-15 in Gold Coast, Australia.
