Fact sheet on Wolbachia

* Wolbachia are natural bacteria present in up to 60 per cent of all the different species of insects around us, including some types of mosquitoes;

* It is safe for humans, animals and the environment and

* Unfortunately it is not present in the mosquito, the primary species responsible for transmitting harmful human viruses such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika.

Fact sheet on Dengue

* Dengue is the fastest emerging mosquito-borne viral infection;

* The infection causes flu-like illness, and occasionally develops into a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue;

* The global incidence of dengue has grown dramatically in recent decades. Almost a third of the world's population is now at risk;

* The maximum burden is borne by countries of the Asia-Pacific region;

* An estimated 2.5 billion people are at risk globally, about 1.8 billion-more than 70 per cent — reside in Asia Pacific countries;

* Dengue is found in tropical and sub-tropical climates worldwide, mostly in urban and semi-urban areas.

* There is no specific treatment for dengue/severe dengue, but early detection and access to proper medical care lowers fatality rates below 1 per cent;

* In the last few years alone, there has been 30,000 suspected cases of dengue in Fiji, Vanuatu and Kiribati and

* More than 10,000 dengue cases were reported in New Caledonia in the last nine months.
