Narayan: Women important for business growth

SOUTH Pacific Stock Exchange (SPSE) CEO Krishika Narayan says the "Ring the Bell for Gender Equality" event is to re-emphasise the importance of women's economic empowerment to business growth and development.

"And highlight the role the private sector can play in creating opportunities and prospects for women in the business arena as well as communities," she said.

Ms Narayan made the comment during the SPSE's celebration of International Women's Day which was marked by the SPSE ringing its opening trading bell to raise awareness about the business case for gender equality and sustainable development at Tanoa Plaza Hotel yesterday.

She said in the SPSE Women in Leadership training program last year, 25 professional women from SPSE listed companies and other selected companies had graduated for leadership roles.

"SPSE's participation in such events is a testament to how genuinely we view the agenda of gender parity as women's lack of representation in positions of leadership continues to be broadly acknowledged throughout the business world," Ms Narayan said.

"SPSE believes in the value and associated economic benefits to companies and the economy that can be derived from progressing gender diversity in the corporate arena."

To mark the bell ringing ceremony, the SPSE also organised a debate on the topic; "Should SPSE mandate listed companies to have women representation on its board through the SPSE Listing Rules?". The six debate panellists included five professional women with Waisale Iowane, the director and CFO of Free Bird Institute Ltd, the only male panellist.
