End sexual violence, be part of the solution

SEXUAL violence is everybody's business and change can only begin by educating each other and raising awareness.

These were the sentiments of Fiji Women's Rights Movement (FWRM) executive director Nalini Singh.

Ms Singh was, last night, speaking during a creative art performance organised by FWRM to commemorate International Women's Day at the University of the South Pacific's Laucala Bay complex in Suva.

Ms Singh said Fijians needed to recognise the deeply-entrenched patriarchy in our cultures and religion and the systematic barriers women and girls faced.

The packed Australian Aid lecture theatre at the university featured children, women and men from all walks of life who turned up to be part of the show.

Ms Singh said the organisation worked on many issues from structural barriers to achieving gender equality, economic rights including employment protection as well as preventing sexual harassment in the workplace.

She said gender-based violence were among some of the issues they were fighting for.

"Sexual violence is a grave, cruel and severe breach of human rights that leaves long-term psychological and physical damage," Ms Singh said.

"It is devastating that it is those in positions of trust, perceived to be a loved one or friend who could be the main perpetrators," Ms Singh said.
