Plant cane now for 2019, says Chetty

SUGARCANE farmers should take advantage of the favourable weather and plant cane for the 2019 season, says the Sugar Cane Growers Council.

CEO Sundresh Chetty said the spate of wet weather across the cane belts in the Western Division made ground conditions conducive to planting new cane.

"This is especially true for growers in hilly areas. The recent rain is prime for planting and I would like to urge them to take advantage of it," he said.

"In terms of the government cane development fund allocation that was announced in the 2017-2018 budget, there are still funds available."

Mr Chetty said about 5800 hectares of new cane and ratoon restored crops had been realised, utilising the $15.4 million set aside for sugarcane development and farm assistance program.

Mr Chetty said apart from planting more cane, farmers also needed to pay close attention to weed management.

"This is important because weeds rapidly absorb fertiliser that is meant for cane. I urge growers to take advantage of the $6.3m weedicide subsidy to remove weed from their farms and also in the headland areas."

Mr Chetty added that a weed known as itchy grass was especially notorious for impeding cane development.
