Dept reassesses EIA

THE Department of Environment is currently reassessing the approval condition in the 2016 environment impact assessment (EIA) approval of the Savusavu Bay development project.

This was revealed by Attorney-General and Acting Minister for Local Government, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum yesterday while responding to a question by Opposition MP Ro Kiniviliame Kiliraki on whether or not there had been objections based on the grounds of environmental exploitation against such development in the area.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the developer, Nawi Island Development, was given the green light in 2007, but when the scope of the development moved to the foreshore, another EIA had to be carried out in 2016.

During both the EIA assessments, several public meetings were held where concerns were raised by the public, he said.

"Most of these concerns were noise during construction, traffic and navigation channels. These concerns have been incorporated into the EIA reports and the approval conditions.

"Having said that, the Ministry of Environment takes note of the concerns currently being raised by the citizenry of Savusavu and is reassessing the approval condition in the 2016 EIA approval," Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

"One of the conditions, Madam Speaker, that the ministry is considering is for the developer to plant at least six hectares of mangrove every hectare removed."

He reiterated that before a developer needed final approval, they were required to go through the EIA process that included consultations with the community, and this was done for this project.
