$0.5m spent on dengue campaign

A TOTAL of $0.5 million has been spent so far by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services on clean-up and chemical spraying for dengue fever prevention.

However, Health Minister Rosy Akbar informed Parliament yesterday that the use of chemicals to destroy mosquitoes was only a band-aid solution.

She said the best and safest way to fight the bite was to keep the surroundings clean.

"While chemical spraying has its uses, it is only useful in the short-term because it largely kills adult mosquitoes (as well as other useful insects) in the immediate environment and not the larvae (baby mosquitoes) which normally breed in the stagnant water collected in the empty tins or tyres, flower vase etc," Ms Akbar said. Ms Akbar said chemical spraying should be used with caution and in moderation because it would also lead to mosquitoes building resistance against its effects.
