THERE were a number of anomalies in the Help for Home Initiative after Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston, Government has admitted.

This was told to Parliament by Attorney-General and Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum yesterday.

"The reality is that there were anomalies. The reality is there were people who filled out forms who were not supposed to fill the forms. We need to have accountability in that respect," Mr Sayed- Khaiyum said.

"Some people have already been charged and brought before the courts. We understand also that there have been certain locals who have been stealing other people's hardware materials.

"For example, in the Yasawas, a company that has been given the contract to build the school under the TC Winston rehabilitation is going to the villages and taking their hardware materials to use it for the school rebuild.

"There is a number of anomalies."

He also confirmed Government was aware of the 10 people of Navakawau on Taveuni who were yet to receive their hardware materials because they were being investigated.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said they had followed up with police and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Mereseini Vuniwaqa also informed Parliament that Government had expanded a sum of $127.1m to assist 37,077 Fijian families to rebuild and complete their homes through the initiative.

"The supply of building materials is nearing completion as per our record," she said.

Mrs Vuniwaqa also said the preparation for monitoring and evaluation processes have commenced.

The initiative was launched in 2016 to help people whose homes were damaged during the cyclone.
