AS part of its continuing efforts to strengthen regional networking, the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) are hosting a three-member Tongan delegation at its head office in Suva.

The delegation from the island kingdom will be attached with FCCC from Monday March 5 to Friday March 9 during which they would be working closely with the complaints and compliance; price control; monitoring and the legal teams.

This will allow the Tongan delegation to understudy the key roles of FCCC and ascertain how best they can apply the knowledge gained in their line of work upon their return.

According to a statement from FCCC, the delegates comprise of staff members from the Enforcement and Compliance Division under the Tongan Ministry of Commerce, Consumer, Trade, Innovation and Labour.

The attachment has been initiated and funded by the Tongan ministry.

The Tongan delegation consists of Anometa Ungoungo, who looks into consumer complaints and inputting database, Aloisia Latupauu Fakaanga in charge of the pricing, weights and measures section and Mele Muimui Liu Mei Tupou Tovi who is an expert in mediation and also provides legal advice and collates evidence for prosecution.

FCCC chief executive officer Joel Abraham said in order to ensure effective learning takes place, FCCC would engage the delegation in complaints handling processes, market surveys and price checks.

"Rather than limiting one's ability to learning by listening, FCCC works towards ensuring learning by doing," Mr Abraham said.

"FCCC sees such attachments as an opportunity to enhance the capacity of the Enforcement and Compliance Division under the Ministry of Commerce, Consumer, Trade, Innovation and Labour, Tonga. "It is envisaged that the weeklong attachment will greatly enhance the knowledge of the Delegates allowing them to improve their existing measures in Tonga."

FCCC has also been advocating for a regional network of regulations and such bilateral exchanges showcase the demand for continued regional co-operation.

This has seen the Fijian commission previously hosting delegates from other Pacific island countries including Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Samoa and Vanuatu.
