Love and passion for design

FIJIAN fashion designer Hupfeld Hoerder's love and passion for creative challenges are what drive him to excel.

He says it had enabled him to look beyond the obstacles and focus on what he does best — designing.

And his zeal was evident this week as Mr Hoerder's extraordinary garment creation was showcased at Buckingham Palace, London, during the Commonwealth Fashion Exchange (CFE).

The local designer flew Fiji's flag high with a creation that drew attention at the fashion extravaganza.

Mr Hoerder's garment was created through a collaborated exchange with three female artisans from Vanuatu and two from the Seychelles.

Fiji Fashion Week Ltd managing director Ellen Whippy-Knight said Hoerder's piece attracted a lot of attention as his garments were made from natural materials.

The CFE works to support and advocate sustainable development, education, youth and gender empowerment in current and emerging fashion industries within the 53 member nations of the Commonwealth.

Mr Hoerder said such achievements were only possible through continued perseverance and passion.

Mr Hoerder resigned from a full-time position as a hospitality and business administration lecturer at the University of the South Pacific in June last year to focus on designing.

"I only work part time at the university and now have more time to concentrate on my real passion," he said.

"The (CFE) event was amazing as it opened up more opportunities and we were able to build networks with other artisans."

Mr Hoerder will travel to Shanghai University, China, later this month for a one-month study.
