Reduce cancer risks

EVERY year the Ministry of Health and Medical Services records more than 1100 new cases of cancer and an average of less than 700 deaths because of cancer.

And according to national adviser for non-communicable diseases Dr Isimeli Tukuna, more than 50 per cent were found to be breast and cervical cancers in women.

"This is not to say that men cannot have breast cancer," he said while officiating at the launch of World Cancer Day at Albert Park in Suva yesterday.

"We do have a small number of men who had breast cancer.

"However, the most common cancer in males is prostate cancer and it is also the third most common cancer in Fiji.

"We also have cancers in children, although they make up less than 1 per cent of the new cancers we see every year. We see about half of them surviving with treatment and a small number being cured.

"Other cancers that are of great concern to us are cancers of the mouth, skin, bowels and you will be able to learn more about them from the displays at the information booths being put up at the event today (yesterday)."

Dr Tukuna urged those present at the event to work together to fight this killer diseases.

"The fact is, cancer is preventable and treatable when detected early. The cancer burden can be controlled when we work together. This special day helps us to reflect on what we can do as a survivor, as a co-worker, as a friend, as an employer, as a care giver, as a student, as a faith-based group, as a cancer organisation, as a family, as a community and as a nation to make a pledge and not only to pledge but to actually do something to fight against cancer," he said.

The theme for World Cancer Day 2018 is "You can and I can prevent cancer".
