Family homeless after fire

TWO children and their family are now homeless after a fire destroyed their two-bedroom home in Cunningham, Suva.

The family of six has been living in the house for the past nine years.

Describing the loss, distraught Raijieli Cagievuevu, 59, said she was at home with her two grandchildren when one of them alerted her about the fire breaking out from one of the rooms.

"My grandchildren had just come back from school and we were sitting down having our afternoon tea when one of my grandchildren, Jayden, told us about the fire," Ms Cagievuevu said.

"I then ran to the room to check it out when I saw that the mattress on the bed inside was on fire.

"I then dragged one side of the mattress out of the house, but when I came in, flames had spread to the curtains and to the rest of the room."

Ms Cagievuevu said she then realised there was nothing she could do to save their home, but to take her grandchildren to safety.

"Despite the heavy rain, the fire spread so quickly to the rest of the house," she said.

"I don't even know who alerted the police and the National Fire Authority. My only concern was to bring everyone to safety.

"I am so thankful to God that no life was taken, but it's so unfortunate for my family that this has happened."

Efforts to get a comment from the National Fire Authority on the incident last night were futile.
