Marked man

OLYMPIAN and Fiji Airways Fiji 7s captain Jerry Tuwai is an "internationally marked man,"' says national coach Gareth Baber.

He says all teams in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series have the nippy Fijian skipper under their radar.

"Jerry, obviously is a marked man in terms of international 7s," Baber said. "We are trying to help Jerry in his game so that he can take the opportunities in order to do well and to make him a stronger player.

"Jerry is leading the team well. The responsibilities also come with being a captain and he is responding well to it." Tuwai, in the Sydney 7s and New Zealand 7s, could not find space to engage his on-the-field elusiveness by goosestepping oppositions and weaving through defences because he was marked by oppositions. The 28-year-old made his debut for Fiji in 2014 and since then had won a number of titles, especially under former coach Ben Ryan. Last week he led Fiji's feat in the NZ 7s which was hosted for the first time by Hamilton City. Fiji beat South Africa 24-7 at the FMG Waikato Stadium. Tuwai was named the player of the tournament in the USA 7s and Dubai 7s in 2015.

Meanwhile, he returned to camp with his men this week to prepare for the Las Vegas and Vancouver 7s tournaments next month.

Baber said he would work on the team's weaknesses from the past two tournaments. "We would test their fitness level and then we will continue with training. We will play some matches with local teams to help in the preparation and focus for Las Vegas and Vancouver 7s," he said.

"We might play with the Provider and the Police team."
