Kids spend day catching dinner

WHILE schools in the Lomaiviti Group remained closed because of Tropical Cyclone Gita, children on Koro island made use of the fine weather yesterday.

At Naqaidamu Village, six children sat on the edge of a culvert fishing for their dinner.

William Vakaciwa, 13, the eldest among his cousins, said this was something they often did when there was nothing to do.

"When we wake up in the morning, we first do our chores and then when we are free. We come here to fish," he said.

He added the fish caught would be taken home for lunch or dinner.

From a family of seven siblings, William said he was happy to have helped his parents.

"Sometimes I can catch 10 or 20 fish and then we share. The rest I take home.

"When I grow up, I would like to be an engineer on a ship because I would like to travel the world," he said with a smile before putting bait on his hook and casting his line out.

Villagers still remained in evacuation centres at the Nasau Methodist Church, while those in school have been asked to vacate because school is expected to resume today.
