GOVERNMENT'S committee for better utilisation of land (CBUL) initiative has benefited individual landowners and landowning units with more than $50 million being paid out since 2010, says Prime Minister and Minister for iTaukei Affairs.

Speaking to the people on the first day of the three-day consultation on sugar and land issues in Sigatoka yesterday, the PM said the CBUL program was empowering farmers and the indigenous community.

Mr Bainimarama said $3.72m was paid out this week to 1479 yavusa, mataqali and tokatoka landowners who had given their consent to renew agricultural leases under the CBUL initiative.

"In addition to this, the payment also benefited a total of 138,899 individual landowning unit members who have individual bank accounts who will also have a share from this CBUL funds," he said.

"Since 2010, Government has paid out more than $50m to this facility that has directly had an impact on the renewal rate of agricultural leases from 47 per cent way back in 2010 to over 80 per cent as of December, 2017.

"The CBUL program has been an empowering program for both farmers and landowners."

According to the Prime Minister, the funds were released on Tuesday.
