Update: 6:16PM FIVE evacuation centres housing 288 citizens are still in operation in southern Lau, activated during Severe Tropical Cyclone Gita.

According to the National Disaster Management Office, the evacuation centres were Vatoa District School, Matokana Evacuation Center, Ono-i-Lau Post Office, Ono-i-Lau Nursing Station and Ono Levu District School.

Disaster management officials expect the figures to drop as villagers clear debris in the clean up after the weather clears.

Anare Leweniqila, the director of the National Disaster Management Office said reactions and preparations prior to TC Gita indicate lessons learnt following TC Winston were put to practice.

Mr. Leweniqila added the preparedness of people in Lau and Fiji in general must be commended as there were no injuries or casualties reported.
