FRA works on bridge

THE Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) says it is aware of the circumstances surrounding the crossing at the Waima bridge in Vunidawa, Naitasiri

FRA chief executive officer Jonathan Moore said they knew of the bridge's badly scoured out approaches and embankments.

Last week, a team from this newspaper visited Matailobau villager Sailasa Nacika in Naitasiri, who then took the team to the Waima bridge.

Mr Nacika said they raised their concern to relevant authorities regarding the only bridge that linked seven villages and other settlements to the outside world.

Mr Moore said during the heavy rain in November and December last year, FRA reinstated the washed out approaches temporarily to allow for vehicle access, while they dealt with other critical emergency situations around the network.

"In January, FRA had reinspected the site and has come up with a proposal to permanently secure these embankments using the method 'rip rap' of specially picked angular rocks that will protect this phase from scouring," he said.

"FRA has now given instructions to its contractors to carry out these works and we anticipate completion by the end of February."
