Medic enters politics to serve

GENERAL practitioner Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu hopes to promote peace, stability and economic prosperity as he ventures into politics.

Ratu Atonio will be contesting this year's general election as a Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) candidate.

He was declared as one of the party's 30 provisional candidates during the announcement of the party's candidates in December last year.

"My vision is the promotion of peace, stability and economic prosperity and that its progress must be founded on the rule of law, true parliamentary democracy, equity and social justice for all our people — to 'make Fiji free again'," he said.

Ratu Atonio, who is the son of Opposition Parliamentarian and Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, said he hoped to continue serving the people of Fiji — something the past four generations of his family has been doing before his entrance into politics.

In his line of work, Ratu Atonio serves his community as a general practitioner catering for the medical needs of the general population on Taveuni and neighbouring islands.

He believes that standing in this year's election will allow him to serve ordinary people at national level.

He added he chose to contest for SODELPA because he believed it was the party of choice for a democratic, multicultural and multiracial Fiji.

"It is the party that will uphold Christian values and principles and will respect the beliefs and values of other religions.

"SODELPA will ensure that we have a government that is accountable and transparent.

"SODELPA will protect and promote the interests, aspirations and rights of indigenous Fijians and at the same time protect the rights and aspirations of other ethnic groups," he said.
