Frightening experience

Mere Naleba
Wednesday, February 14, 2018

THE fear that Linita Teisina's family experienced on Monday night was similar to the experiences of many Tongans on the Island kingdom as Tropical Cyclone Gita ravaged through houses and buildings, destroying everything in its path.

Teisina, a journalist from Tonga, who had studied at the University of the South Pacific's Suva campus, said it was a frightening experience as water seeping into their house.

"TC Gita was really strong. My family and I were fully awake last night (Monday) because we were scared. Water came into our house through the main entrance and the sliding door," she said.

"It is so hard to imagine our situation in Tonga. Some families, their houses were destroyed and government officials have been trying to clear out the roads in the Nuku'alofa areas."

Teisina said the priority for her family after TC Gita was to clean up their surroundings.

The Tongan Ministry of Health had announced a dengue fever outbreak on the island a few weeks back.

"Breadfruit, fruit trees and crops were destroyed," she said.

She said communication on the island was still down with some roads still inaccessible.
