Authority stops shipping services

MARINE clearance in the Central and Eastern divisions for all ships yesterday ceased with immediate effect until further notice as the country prepared for Tropical Cyclone Gita.

This was confirmed by Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji CEO John Tunidau, saying the only exception was for emergency evacuation runs, if required.

"All ship masters, shipowners and ship agents for foreign and local ships, pilot, port management companies, operators, marinas and yacht clubs are advised of the approach of Severe Tropical Cyclone Gita," Mr Tunidau said.

"Small boat owners are advised to take necessary precautionary measures to ensure their vessels are safe."

Mr Tunidau said shipowners of larger ships must provide all necessary support to masters of their ships and exercise good judgment to ensure vessels are kept safe during the passing of the cyclone.
