DIPLOMA and degree qualified teachers will now be placed on different job descriptions, says Attorney -General and Minister for Education Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

He confirmed this in a statement last night after queries raised by this newspaper regarding the salary entry points for qualified teachers.

In January this year, the Confederation of Public Sector Unions had addressed a letter to the director of the Civil Service Reform Management Unit (CSRMU) questioning the reduction of salaries of qualified teachers.

In the letter, the union claimed that degree level primary school teachers whose contracts were renewed at the beginning of this year had their salaries reduced.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said from now on teachers would be paid different salaries based on their performance and not solely on their qualification.

The Education Minister said the re-evaluation of the differences in jobs was in accordance with the job evaluation guideline and established practice through the reforms.

"The re-evaluation of the differences in the jobs reflects this findings; for classroom teaching position in all sectors," Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said. "The fully qualified teacher — requiring a degree — will be on the same Band (F), while assistant teachers — requiring a diploma — will be on a lower Band (E)."

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the transition of teachers in bands would occur quickly and the salary increase would be made effective from February 22.

He clarified that the ministry would work in ensuring that teachers are paid according to their contracts.

"The ministry has been instructed to honour the original contract and to ensure that teachers are not disadvantaged by administrative error," Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
