Adverse weather downs class tent

"WE do not want to have more classes in tents, we need proper classrooms."

These were the words of 11-year-old Nemani Buliruarua while standing in front of what used to be his tent classroom.

The Year 6 student of Tuatua/Nasau Primary School on Koro Island said he was disappointed that school had to be cancelled yesterday.

"I enjoy school, I love to go to school every day. It hurts me that I cannot come to school, because my classroom was destroyed," said Buliruarua, who aspires to be a nurse.

His classroom tent was destroyed by strong winds and heavy rain caused by tropical depression 07F last weekend.

The 200 students were told the school was closed as teachers, who lived in tents, tried to salvage what was left of their belongings.

"This is what we have to do whenever there is strong wind or heavy rain. Most times, our school stationery and supplies are damaged and there is nothing much we can do but wait because rehabilitation is slow," said school manager Simeli Cokanasiga.
